The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation hotspot ever since the 1800s. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is probable that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A further village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely under the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically across the ages predominantly due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up until the 60's at which time fish stocks diminished. Aside from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were regularly operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered boats.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd train station to the East Midlands opened up approximately a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, but was reconstructed during the 19th century and at this time has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
