The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has long been a fashionable holiday spot. Equally respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential income for its fishermen over the decades.

Cromer nowadays has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is most likely that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. Another village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the sea, around four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically through the decades by and large due to the skill of its fishermen, a business which prospered up to the 1960's when the numbers of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often unsafe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were for the most part crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

The tourism business started in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in 1877, delivering lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station joining it to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, but was remodelled in the 19thC and currently boasts the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
