The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite holiday spot. Furthermore well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a significant source of income for the local fishermen over the ages.

The town at this time has a population of about 7,700 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A second settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was situated some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically over the years predominantly through the talent of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived until the 60's when fish numbers declined. Besides the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently severe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday business started out in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in the 1870s, driving increasing amounts of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the fourteenth century, but was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
