The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday spot since the 19th century. Equally recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a vital income for its local fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a population of around 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), however there were certainly Saxon settlements in the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400 meters north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago stood some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured economically across the centuries predominantly through the activities of its fishermen, a business which prospered up until the 1960's as fish stocks diminished. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mainly manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The tourism industry developed in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing a growing quantity of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands was opened roughly a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, though it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and presently has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
