The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless it is undeniable that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is conceivable that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially across the years predominantly through the expertise of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the 60's when stocks of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominately crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying growing numbers of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt in the 1800s and at the moment has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
