Cromer in Norfolk: Discovered on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable vacation destination. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is unquestionable that there were Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is possible that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely under the sea, roughly 400 meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed economically through the centuries mainly due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which prospered until the 60's at which time fish stocks declined. Aside from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often hazardous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mostly operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was famous for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in 1877, delivering more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional train station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, although was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
