Cromer Norfolk: Set on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable vacation spot. The town at this time has a populace of just under 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, although it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. An additional settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally swallowed by the sea, around four hundred meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed financially through the years mostly through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that flourished until the 1960's when stocks of fish decreased. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were usually operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in the 1870s, drawing an increasing quantity of visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd train station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, though it was reconstructed in the 19thC and at this time has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
