The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular holiday destination. Also famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading income for the local fishermen since early days.

The town at present has a population of about eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is most likely that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was positioned where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer originally sat some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived through the decades for the most part by the activity of its fishermen, a business which did well up until the 1960's as fish numbers dropped. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly severe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were essentially manned by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday business started off in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate railway station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, though it was reconstructed during the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
