Cromer in Norfolk: Situated on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation destination since the 19th century. Additionally known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a major income for the local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer nowadays has a population of just below 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is quite possible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. One additional village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the ocean, around four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically throughout the ages primarily through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish declined. Aside from the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally life-threatening conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were in most cases manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered craft.

The tourist business developed in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in 1877, delivering a growing quantity of tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up around ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul first dates from the 14th C, although it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and currently has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
