The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the area, it is quite possible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time stood some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed economically through the centuries for the most part by the activity of its fishermen, an industry which prospered up until the 60's as the numbers of fish declined. As well as lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically severe sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered boats.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd railway station to the East Midlands opened about a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, though it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and at this time has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
