The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the region, it is most likely that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. An additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, around four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer at one time stood from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially across the generations mainly through the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered up to the 1960's as the numbers of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally perilous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were most often operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist industry started in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled in the 1800s and now has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
