Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday location ever since the 1800s. Additionally reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a major source of income for its local fishermen since early days.

Cromer at present has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is plausible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now lies. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally covered by the sea, about 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was situated some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically throughout the generations for the most part due to the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up until the 60's as the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely severe sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were largely crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered craft.

Tourism commenced in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was famed for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another train station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was remodelled in the 1800s and at the moment has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
