The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there were certainly Saxon settlements in the region, it is plausible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was placed where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally swallowed by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed across the generations primarily through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished until the 1960's when the numbers of fish declined. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly risky conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were essentially crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to replace rowed boats.

The tourism business started off in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was famous for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in 1877, drawing a growing quantity of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another railway station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt during the 19thC and presently boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
