The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation location ever since the 19th century. Additionally known as a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential income for the local fishermen since early days.

The town at present has a population of around seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon townships around the area, it is feasible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. Another settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely covered by the sea, around 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained through the decades predominantly by the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered up until the 60's when fish numbers declined. Aside from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally hazardous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered craft.

The tourism business commenced in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was recognized for the clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in 1877, drawing increasing numbers of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened around ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th Cent, but was remodelled in the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
