Cromer Norfolk: Found on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday destination. Furthermore renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an essential source of income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer currently has a populace of just under eight thousand residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Saxon encampments in the area, it is likely that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically throughout the ages by and large through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks went into decline. As well as the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes hazardous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were by and large crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist industry began in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station to the East Midlands opened around ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, and it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
