Cromer in Norfolk: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation spot since the nineteenth century. Additionally known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential source of income for its local fishermen since early times.

Cromer currently has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there were certainly Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is probable that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. An additional settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally covered by the sea, roughly 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time sat inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained across the centuries principally due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up to the 1960's when fish numbers diminished. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often life-threatening sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace rowed vessels.

The tourism business developed in the town in the early 19th century, and it was renowned for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, delivering an increasing quantity of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and at the moment has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
