The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable vacation destination. Equally respected as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential income source for its fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a population of around eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), though there were certainly Saxon communites in the area, it is feasible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it was placed where the parish church now lies. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 metres north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically over the years predominantly through the talent of its fishermen, a business that did well up until the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish declined. Besides the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally hazardous conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were frequently crewed by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate rail station to the East Midlands opened about 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled during the 1800s and now has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
