The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally covered by the sea, about four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some way inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially throughout the centuries mainly by the competence of its fishermen, a business that flourished up until the 60's at which time fish numbers dropped. Apart from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism commenced in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in 1877, delivering a growing number of people to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th Cent, although it was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
