Cromer Norfolk: Standing on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation spot ever since the nineteenth century. Additionally renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a vital income for the local fishermen over the generations.

Cromer nowadays has a population of roughly 7,700 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there were certainly Saxon townships in the area, it is possible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. An additional village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally covered by the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time was situated some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived over the years mainly by the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered until the 60's as fish numbers decreased. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most often manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed lifeboats.

The tourism industry commenced in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving increasing amounts of travellers to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. Another train station linking it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, although was rebuilt during the 19th century and now boasts the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
