The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is quite possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely under the sea, around four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time was situated some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically over the years by and large by the activity of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up until the 60's at which time the numbers of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely severe conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were most often manned by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism commenced in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famous for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station linking it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th C, and it was rebuilt during the 1800s and today boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
