Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the northern coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday destination since the 19th century. Likewise well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing an important income source for its fishermen since early days.

The town currently has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the sea, roughly 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some way inland, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically throughout the centuries mostly through the activity of its fishermen, a business that prospered until the 1960's as the numbers of fish went into decline. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was famed for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in 1877, delivering more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another railway station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, although was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
