Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favourite vacation destination. Equally famous as a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important source of income for its fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer presently has a population of approximately 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived through the centuries by and large by the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered up until the 1960's when stocks of fish diminished. In addition to the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were for the most part crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourist industry started out in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was famed for the clean air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing an increasing number of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, although was remodelled in the 19thC and currently has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
