The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is most likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, roughly 400 meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained across the ages primarily due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up to the 60's when the numbers of fish diminished. Aside from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly unsafe sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism started out in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, and it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and at the moment has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
