The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Standing on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite holiday spot. Equally reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant income for its fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer at present has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there certainly would have been Saxon townships in the area, it is probable that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was located where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, around 400 metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago sat from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially through the years mostly by the activity of its fishermen, a business that flourished up until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often unsafe conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed vessels.

The tourism business began in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was renowned for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, driving growing amounts of visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, though it was reconstructed during the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
