Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite holiday destination. Furthermore famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a vital income source for the local fishermen for many centuries.

The town nowadays has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now lies. One additional village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters from the pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the decades for the most part due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well until the 60's when the numbers of fish dropped. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly dangerous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were largely operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The holiday business started off in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, delivering an increasing amount of travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another train station to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th century, and it was rebuilt during the 19thC and now has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
