Cromer in Norfolk: Found on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular holiday spot. Likewise reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town currently has a populace of around 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), although there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the region, it is likely that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. Another settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some distance from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially over the ages predominantly through the prowess of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up to the 1960's when the numbers of fish dropped. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism developed in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing lots more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands was opened around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
