In addition renowned for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital source of income for the local fishermen since early times.

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there were certainly Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A second village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally covered by the sea, around 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some way inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically throughout the years primarily by the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered until the nineteen sixties when fish numbers dropped. In addition to the the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly severe conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mostly manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in the town in the early 1800s, and it was acknowledged for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, driving lots more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, although it was remodelled during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
