Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. Equally recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, providing a substantial income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer today has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is very likely that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it stood where the parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 metres north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained across the centuries principally through the activity of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 60's at which time fish numbers declined. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often dangerous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were usually operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

The holiday business commenced in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for the clean air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to Cromer in 1877, drawing an increasing amount of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another railway station connecting it to the East Midlands opened about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, though it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
