The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday destination since the 1800s. In addition known as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a major income source for its fishermen over the decades.

The town nowadays has a population of just under eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is clear that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is very likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was located where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the sea, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived across the decades for the most part due to the ability of its fishermen, a business which thrived up until the 1960's as fish stocks went into decline. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely risky conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed lifeboats.

The tourism business started off in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving lots more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. The second railway station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th Cent, but was remodelled during the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
