The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday hotspot ever since the 19th century. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is likely that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely under the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the generations by and large by the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived until the 1960's as fish numbers went into decline. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally risky conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were more often than not crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism started in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was famed for its clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, drawing more and more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. The second train station joining it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, though it was remodelled during the 1800s and today boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
