The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation spot ever since the 19th century. Likewise well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a major income for the fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer these days has a population of approximately 7,700 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically across the centuries primarily by the activity of its fishermen, a business which did well up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally treacherous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were predominately manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started off in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famed for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to the town in 1877, driving lots more travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened up about ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, though it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
