The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book (1086), although there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now lies. A different village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the sea, approximately four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed throughout the centuries mostly by the ability of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up until the 60's as fish numbers decreased. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally risky conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were normally operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

The holiday industry developed in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was famous for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in 1877, driving a growing number of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another railway station joining it to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was remodelled in the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
