The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular vacation spot. Likewise known for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a vital income source for the fishermen for many generations.

Cromer these days has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is evident that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is probable that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was situated where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally covered by the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially across the generations predominantly through the activities of its fishermen, an industry that thrived until the 60's at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically unsafe conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station linking it to the East Midlands was opened about 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, although was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
