The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it stood where the parish church now lies. Another settlement shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, about four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer long ago stood inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained through the years mostly due to the activity of its fishermen, an industry which prospered up to the 60's at which time the numbers of fish dropped. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently severe sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in the 1870s, bringing lots more tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, although was rebuilt in the 19thC and at present boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
