The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation spot since the 19th century. Equally reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential income source for the local fishermen throughout the centuries.

Cromer today has a population of about 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. One additional village identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally swallowed by the sea, approximately four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the generations for the most part due to the competence of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up to the 60's at which time fish numbers decreased. Besides lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed boats.

Tourism developed in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in 1877, carrying more and more travellers to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second rail station to the East Midlands opened up approximately a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, and it was reconstructed during the 1800s and currently has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
