Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite vacation spot. Also reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital source of income for the fishermen for many generations.

The town currently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon communites in the area, it is conceivable that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed over the decades primarily through the talent of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up to the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often severe sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed vessels.

Tourism developed in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to Cromer in 1877, drawing more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. The second station linking it to the East Midlands was opened approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and at the moment has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
