The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is quite possible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it was placed where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some way inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially through the years for the most part by the talent of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers diminished. In addition to the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often dangerous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second rail station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
