Cromer in Norfolk: Situated on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular vacation spot. Likewise reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, providing a vital income source for the fishermen for many generations.

The town nowadays has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is undeniable that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is quite possible that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it stood where the parish church now lies. A second settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time sat inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically throughout the years primarily due to the activity of its fishermen, an industry which did well until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. Apart from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often life-threatening conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed lifeboats.

The tourism business began in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an ever-increasing quantity of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the 19thC and today boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
