Cromer originally was positioned some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially over the decades principally due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which did well up to the 60's when stocks of fish declined. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely perilous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered craft.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was famed for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1877, drawing an ever-increasing amount of visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another train station to the East Midlands opened about a decade later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and at the moment has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
