The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favorite holiday destination. In addition recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a substantial income for its fishermen throughout the centuries.

Cromer these days has a population of around seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the area, it is plausible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the decades predominantly due to the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived until the 60's at which time fish numbers went into decline. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday business commenced in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to Cromer in 1877, drawing lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, though it was remodelled during the 19th century and at the moment has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
