The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, around 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the years principally by the activities of its fishermen, a business that prospered until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks went into decline. In addition to the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally severe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were usually operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed boats.

The tourism business began in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was famed for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing growing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra train station to the East Midlands opened up about ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, and it was remodelled in the 1800s and presently boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
