Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular holiday spot. Equally known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital source of income for the fishermen throughout the generations.

The town presently has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is not disputed that there were Saxon townships in the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the decades predominantly through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically unsafe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

The holiday business began in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in 1877, drawing an ever-increasing quantity of people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, although was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
