Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation spot since the nineteenth century. Additionally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, providing a major income source for its fishermen for many generations.

Cromer presently has a population of just under 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is a fact that there were Saxon communites in the area, it is quite possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago sat from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has endured over the generations primarily through the ability of its fishermen, a business which did well until the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were essentially operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in 1877, carrying increasing numbers of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, and it was remodelled in the 19th century and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
