Cromer Norfolk: Discovered on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday spot since the nineteenth century. Also renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential income source for the local fishermen through the years.

Cromer presently has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships around the area, it is possible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely under the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained over the decades predominantly due to the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered up to the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often life-threatening sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The holiday business began in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in 1877, driving a growing quantity of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, and it was rebuilt in the 19thC and currently has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
