The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favoured holiday spot. Likewise known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a leading income source for the local fishermen since early days.

Cromer currently has a populace of just below 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, although it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is plausible that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A further village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely swallowed by the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained through the ages primarily through the competence of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were usually crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism began in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in 1877, delivering an ever-increasing quantity of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd train station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th Cent, and it was remodelled during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
