Cromer has sustained financially across the ages predominantly through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up to the 60's when fish numbers declined. In addition to the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were largely operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourism business commenced in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was famed for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in 1877, delivering an increasing quantity of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly 10 years after this.
