The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, nonetheless it is a fact that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. An additional village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely covered by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the ages by and large due to the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up to the 1960's when stocks of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically dangerous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were usually manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was recognized for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in 1877, delivering growing amounts of tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, but was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and presently has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
