The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it was located where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed financially over the decades largely by the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the 1960's at which time stocks of fish decreased. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

Tourism developed in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was recognized for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, drawing more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra railway station to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 1800s and now boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
