The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there certainly would have been Saxon encampments in the region, it is quite possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it sat where the parish church now stands. A further settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially across the ages for the most part through the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up to the 60's when stocks of fish dropped. As well as the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally hazardous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourist industry started in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, bringing lots more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the fourteenth century, though it was reconstructed in the 19th century and today boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
