The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is probable that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was located where the parish church now stands. A different village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has endured financially over the ages by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up until the 1960's as fish stocks went into decline. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday business began in the town early in the 19th century, and it was famed for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing lots more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th C, though it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and presently boasts the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
